Our speaker Aaricia Ponnet: How to include our individual perspectives in research

I am currently writing up my PhD thesis, and with the end of my research, questions arise about how I want to document my journey from an individual perspective. My research is inevitably also marked by me as an individual, and hence influenced by my strengths as well as my flaws. Most articles on Second Language Acquisition (SLA) related topics (my field of expertise) report on what worked and rarely mention issues, even failure, that researchers may have encountered along the way. The fact that research is something that doesn’t run as smoothly as we initially thought is something we often talk about among colleagues, but is seldomly reported on in writing.

In this talk, I would like to mutually reflect upon our research journeys and issues we may have encountered. I would like to discuss about how easy (or necessary) it is to report on these issues in different subfields of linguistics, and what extent of honesty we aim to reach when we wish to not only share our results, but also how we got to the end of our research from an individual researcher’s perspective.

Joining this talk will be Seppe Goddaert as booster, and Michael Meeuwis and Rafaël Verbuyst as discussants.

MULTIPLEtalkS is a monthly informal get-together in which a researcher discusses a piece of their own work with other MULTIPLES researchers. During these events we kill multiple birds with one stone: the speaker gets valuable input and feedback on their work, junior and senior researchers get to exchange ideas, we cross the bridge between the two campuses, and we have lunch.

Every MULTIPLEtalkS speaker is joined by a ‘booster’ who helps along and takes notes as well as a discussant who wraps up the discussion.

The general format of a MULTIPLEtalkS:

  • 12.30 Welcome + MULTIPLES updates
  • 12.35 Booster announces the speaker
  • 12.40 Speaker discusses a piece of their work (interaction included)
  • 13.35 Wrap-up by the discussant (5 minutes)

MULTIPLEtalkS is an event at the heart of the MULTIPLES Research Centre and open to researchers from other research groups.

MULTIPLEtalkSWhere?

MULTIPLEtalkS alternate between the campuses of Mercator and Boekentoren. Ideally, they do not take place on the campus where the speaker is based.

MULTIPLEtalkSWhen?

Mostly every third Friday of the month.

We start at 12.30 and aim to wrap up at 14.00 at the latest.
